Iranian ayatollah threatens Azeri govt over alleged Islamic phobia

A senior Iranian cleric has threatened the government of Azerbaijan over alleged instances of Islamic phobia in the country, the neighboring country’s media reported.

During a sermon at a mosque in the holy city of Qom on Thursday, Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi issued a terse warning to Azerbaijani officials.

"Azerbaijani officials should learn a lesson from the developments in the region," he claimed. "The population of Azerbaijan is predominantly Shiite Muslim. But, for some time, the country’s authorities have been taking down mosques and attacking people."

Shirazi also said the spread of religious literature is banned in Azerbaijan. Also, he claimed, the authorities have ordered not to allow schoolchildren and government workers in mosques.

"The pious people of Azerbaijan will not let this go on," the cleric added.
