Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has congratulated President Ilham Aliyev on the 20th anniversary of Azerbaijan's state independence.

"The country develops dynamically, makes significant progress in the economy and social sphere, and strengthens its foreign policy positions in the region and the world. On this important day, we pay tribute to the Azerbaijani national leader Heydar Aliyev, who did much to lay the foundations of the modern democratic state, strengthening the foundations of traditional friendship, good-neighborliness and mutually beneficial cooperation between Russia and Azerbaijan," President Medvedev's message reads.

He stressed with particular satisfaction the mutual disposition to further deepening of the strategic partnership, which has become an important factor of stability and security in the Caucasus and the Caspian region over these years.

"I believe that a fruitful political dialogue, implementation of agreements in trade and economic, investment, humanitarian and other spheres will further contribute to the dynamic development of multi-aspect bilateral cooperation in the interests of our countries and peoples. I sincerely wish peace and prosperity to the friendly Azerbaijani people," Medvedev said in his message.
