Azerbaijan among ex-Soviet states with low suicide rate: UN agency
Azerbaijan is among former Soviet republics with the low rate of suicides – 1.3 per 100,000 people, the United Nations health agency has said.
According to the list compiled by the World Health Organization (WHO), the suicide rate is high in Lithuania (71.7), Russia (64.3) and Belarus (57.5).
Latvia has a high rate as well – 48.2 per 100,000 people, WHO said.
Georgia, Azerbaijan’s neighbor, is also among world countries with a high suicide rate – 8.8 per 100,000 people. Most of the people killing themselves – 80 percent – are men, WHO said.
In Armenia, the figure is 3.9 per 100,000 people, triple the rate reported in Azerbaijan, a neighboring South Caucasus republic.
As for countries with the lowest suicide rate, WHO said these are South Africa, Iran, Jamaica, Haiti and Honduras.
In Western Europe, suicides are least common in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Norway.
The WHO report did not take into account suicide attempts.
