Nagorno Karabakh cited as Armenian territory on CNN
The Armenia-occupied Nagorno Karabakh region of Azerbaijan was indicated as Armenian territory on a program broadcast on CNN, which drew fire from the Azerbaijani community in the United States.
The World View program aired a report on October 3 prepared by Armenian TV channel Yerkir Media that covered an ancient Armenian town allegedly discovered in Nagorno Karabakh.
About 500 US Azerbaijanis sent a strongly worded letter to the host of World View Guillermo Arduino. The diaspora members also called on everyone to send letters of protest to [email protected].
Nagorno Karabakh, along with seven surrounding Azerbaijani regions, has been occupied by Armenian armed forces since a fragile cease-fire was signed by the two South Caucasus republics following a brutal war in the early 1990s.
Ethnic Armenian separatists in Nagorno Karabakh, backed by Armenia, declared so-called independence in 1991, which has not been recognized by the international community.
Talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia to settle the long-standing Nagorno Karabakh conflict, brokered by US, Russian and French mediators, have been largely fruitless so far.
