WHO official condemns Armenian illegal transplants

BAKU – Illegal transplants of organs violate human rights and the World Health Organization strongly condemns them, a WHO official has said in Baku while commenting on cases of Armenia’s selling body parts of Azerbaijani prisoners.

Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict for two decades.

According to Agis Tsouros of WHO Regional Office for Europe, only legal transplants are acceptable in global healthcare.

"True, I have never heard about any discussions on this topic within the WHO," Tsouros said. "But I would like to say that we treat such facts from the viewpoint of human rights. Carrying out unlawful transplant surgeries is unacceptable."

Tsouros added that the United Nations is opposed to illegal transplants and even legal trading in human organs.
