Baku says does not recognize Abkhazia ‘presidential election’
BAKU – Azerbaijan’s government has said it does not recognize the so-called presidential election held in Georgia’s breakaway region of Abkhazia in late August.
The Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday that Baku strongly supports Georgia’s territorial integrity.
"Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry fully backs the Geneva Discussions and believes it is important to continue pursuing constructively the conflict settlement process," the statement says.
Abkhazia, a northwestern province in Georgia, broke away from Tbilisi’s control following an early-1990s war. All countries except Russia, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Nauru and Vanuatu recognize Abkhazia as part of Georgia.
