Germany does not recognize Nagorno Karabakh regime: embassy

BAKU – Germany does not recognize the Nagorno Karabakh regime, a self-proclaimed republic run by ethnic Armenians in the occupied Azerbaijani region, or its representations, the German embassy in Baku has said.

"Germany has not changed its position. The country recognizes the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan," the embassy said in a statement.

The Azerbaijani embassy in Berlin has recently sent a note to the German Foreign Ministry urging it to prevent holding of a concert dedicated to the Nagorno Karabakh separatist regime in Stuttgart. The concert, devoted to the so-called "20th anniversary of independence" of the separatist regime, is scheduled for September 16-22.

The embassy’s statement also says that the German government agencies do not have any links with the organization Friends of Artsakh [the word used by Armenians for Karabakh], one of the organizers of the Stuttgart event.

Nagorno Karabakh has been occupied by Armenian armed forces, along with seven surrounding Azerbaijani regions, since a 1994 cease-fire ended a war that killed an estimated 30,000 people. Peace talks, brokered by US, Russian and French mediators, have been largely fruitless so far.
