Turkic body may get observer status in UN

NEW YORK – Members of the Cooperation Council of Turkic-speaking States -Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkey - have proposed to grant the organization an observer status in the UN General Assembly, the UN press service said.

The four countries’ ambassadors submitted a relevant draft resolution to the UN secretary-general. The issue was included in the Assembly’s preliminary agenda in the 165th place, according to the UN GA.

"If the resolution is passed, the General Assembly should invite the Cooperation Council of Turkic-speaking States to participate in its sessions and overall activity in the capacity of observer and requests the Secretary-General to take the necessary action to implement the present resolution," the UN GA said.

The UN GA session is due on September 13 in New York.

The Council was established in 2009 as an inter-governmental organization to promote comprehensive cooperation among its four founding member states.
