BAKU – The flag of Libya’s transitional council was hoisted at the country’s embassy in Baku on Wednesday, two days after the Libyan flag was lowered at the diplomatic mission.

Charge D’Affairs Naji Ghazala, who raised the flag, told reporters that the victory of revolutionaries was being marked by the embassy staff.

"Thank God, dictator Muammar Gaddafi has been toppled. We are celebrating this with joy," Ghazala said.

According to the diplomat, the hoisting of the flag means that the Libyan embassy recognizes the National Transitional Council and "is no longer inferior to dictator Gaddafi".

Ghazala noted that about 60 countries have already recognized the legitimacy of the transitional council, expressing hope that Azerbaijan would soon follow suit.

The charge d’affairs said the Libyan capital Tripoli is fully under the council’s control. "There are still some minor problems but they will be solved in the coming days."

Ghazala added that the whereabouts of Col. Gaddafi are currently unknown.

Though the world community has said the Gaddafi regime has crumbled, Baku has not yet recognized the Libyan interim council. According to Azerbaijani Ambassador to Libya Aghasalim Shukurov, since the council is not yet formally represented in the government, Baku does not recognize its legitimacy.
