Azeri paper founder charged with tax evasion
BAKU – A criminal case has been launched against a newspaper founder in Azerbaijan on charges of tax evasion and abuse of power, the Prosecutor General’s Office said.
The case was filed after media watchdog Press Council, which has "blacklisted" the Gundem Kheber newspaper, requested to take action against what it said was publication of articles sullying people’s honor and dignity and persistent violations of the Rules of Conduct for journalists.
A scrutiny by the Prosecutor General’s Office department on fighting corruption revealed that Gundem Kheber founder Shirin Jafari, along with blatantly violating the Law on Mass Media, failed to comply with the country’s tax laws. The required tax reports were not compiled, accounting failed to comply with the requirements of legislation and financial reporting was not properly conducted, resulting in the evasion of taxes exceeding 68,000 manats ($86,000), according to the Prosecutor General’s Office.
