Landslide threat in Baku
BAKU – A landslide threat has arisen in the center of Baku, as cracks emerged in soil in an area stretching from the Cemetery of Martyrs toward the Bayil settlement.
Officials said the landslide is not dangerous but a scrutiny is to be carried out to determine its causes.
The cracks were revealed along the trajectory of the landslide that occurred in the area in 2000. The cracks were first reported 12 days ago and began to deepen on Wednesday.
The area was examined on Thursday by Minister of Emergency Situations Kamaladdin Heydarov and Deputy Prime Minister Abid Sharifov, who heads the state commission for emergencies.
Sharifov told reporters that the cracks pose no threat and work will be done to reinforce soil in the area. The cracks will be filled with clay, he said.
"The work will cover an area encompassing hundreds of meters…Cracks that occur with influx of water in the landslide area are causing the scariest process."
According to him, the possibility of a landslide is also due to high precipitation reported this year.
Sharifov said findings of the expertise ongoing in the area will be disclosed in two to three days.
Traffic toward the Bayil slope has been restricted due to the landslide threat.
