Google Maps distorts Azeri geographic names
BAKU – Google Maps has distorted Azerbaijani geographic names in the country’s Armenia-occupied territories, indicating them as referred to by Armenians.
The Kalbajar region was shown as "Karvachar", Khankandi as "Stepanakert" and Shusha as "Shushi".
The Azerbaijani government has appealed to the Google company over this and called on the country’s citizens to vigorously oppose the move.
"We call on the citizens of the Azerbaijan Republic, Azerbaijanis living abroad and media representatives to be more active in these efforts. Let them express their protests to Google," said Elman Abdullayev, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry.
Armenians have changed many historical Azerbaijani names in the occupied territories.
About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory, including Nagorno Karabakh and seven adjacent regions, has been under the occupation of Armenian armed forces since a war in the early 1990s.
Peace talks, brokered by US, Russian and French mediators, began after a shaky cease-fire was signed in 1994 but have been largely fruitless so far.
