US, Israeli terror alerts ‘baseless’ – Azeri presidential aide
BAKU – The Azerbaijani government deems the latest warnings over an alleged terror threat in the country issued by the U.S. and Israel as "uncertain" and "baseless", a presidential aide has said.
Ali Hasanov told the local ANS TV channel on Friday that the crime situation in Azerbaijan is under the government’s control, and both Azerbaijani and foreign nationals should be confident that security is properly ensured in the country.
"It is possible that some circles are really interested in spreading information and shaping a public opinion that Azerbaijan is an unstable state, that there is a terror threat here and that traveling to the country is dangerous. We are sure that there are those [interested in this]. And such baseless information has been repeatedly circulated.
"We are confident about the security environment in Azerbaijan. We have ensured absolute safety in our country. Any crime committed is promptly disclosed," Hasanov said.
Israel’s counter-terrorism bureau has renewed a travel warning for Israelis to Azerbaijan issued in February, citing an alleged "continuous threat to attack Israeli targets" in the country and advising Israeli tourists to avoid traveling there to spend their summer vacation. The bureau warned Israeli citizens who travel to Azerbaijan despite the warning to be "highly sensitive" and aware at tourist venues, avoid places frequented by large numbers of Israelis, decline unexpected business or other proposals, and vary daily routines during prolonged stay in the country.
The spokesman for the US embassy in Azerbaijan, Keith Bean, said on Tuesday that the US government’s warning over an alleged terror threat in Baku remains in force. Bean did not cite the source that issued the terror alert, but added that since Washington has issued several such warnings, the matter is "very serious."
Early this year, the US, British and Israeli governments warned their citizens over an alleged terror threat in Azerbaijan, advising them not to travel to the country or stay away from public places. But no terror attacks have since been committed against foreign nationals.
Azerbaijani law enforcement officials have dismissed the threat of terror attacks in the country.
