13-year-old girl killed by toy with Armenian-planted explosive
BAKU – An Azerbaijani child was killed on Thursday by a toy with a built-in explosive floated by Armenians through a river.
Elnara Shahmaliyeva, a 13-year-old resident of a village in the western Tovuz region bordering on arch-foe Armenia, took the toy out of the water and brought it home, and was killed while playing with it after the explosive went off. The girl’s mother was severely injured as well.
A similar incident occurred in the area in 1994 when two small children were killed and another was wounded after they tried to take a toy out of the river.
Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict for two decades. Armenia has been occupying over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's territory since a war in the early 1990s. The ceasefire accord was signed in 1994, but efforts by international mediators have been largely fruitless so far.
