Caspian status convention to be mulled next week

BAKU – Senior officials of the Caspian Sea littoral states are due to meet on July 19-20 in Moscow for further discussions on the resource-rich basin’s legal status, according to the Russian foreign ministry.

Deputy foreign ministers of the coastal nations – Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Iran and Turkmenistan – will continue discussing the draft convention on the Caspian status. The joint taskforce will also mull preparations for the fourth summit of the coastal nations to be held in Russia, the ministry’s website said.

Azerbaijan, Russia and Kazakhstan signed an agreement in 2001 on dividing the Caspian’s northern area into national sectors, with Azerbaijan and Russia each possessing 19 percent, while the Central Asian state received 29 percent. However, Iran and Turkmenistan did not sign the agreement.

Iran wants all resources shared equally among five states, even though its coast accounts for less than 14 percent.
