NATO to aid another mine clearance project in Azerbaijan
BAKU – A new mine clearance project will be launched in Azerbaijan with NATO’s support in January 2012, according to the country’s agency working to neutralize mines and unexploded ordnances.
The operations will be carried out in the Jeyranchol area in western Azerbaijan, a site of the biggest shooting range of the former Soviet Union’s armed forces where large quantities of UXOs remain to this day.
Nazim Ismayilov, Director of the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA), said Friday that 60 million square meters of territory will be demined under the project. A total of 9 million euros is required for the project, which will be implemented in three stages.
"2.4m euros will be spent during the first stage, which will take 28 months," he said, adding that the Azerbaijani government will provide half of the amount at the most.
Ismayilov said ANAMA and the NATO Maintenance and Supply Agency (NAMSA) are expected to sign an agreement by November to launch the project.
A NATO-supported project aiming to remove Soviet-era unexploded ordnances in Azerbaijan’s western Agstafa region has already been completed.
