NATO says Azerbaijan ‘reliable’ ally
BAKU – Azerbaijan is a "very reliable and close ally" of NATO and the alliance intends to boost its cooperation with the country, its senior official said in Baku Friday.
NATO Assistant Secretary General Gabor Iklody said the South Caucasus republic has made a major contribution to NATO’s operations.
"Azerbaijan has provided its assistance for our operations – first in Kosovo and now in Afghanistan," Iklody told the ceremony of closing a mine clearance project in Azerbaijan.
He said NATO is supporting the Azerbaijani defense ministry in implementing reforms and civilian oversight in the country’s armed forces.
Iklody added that NATO will further develop its political dialog with Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan is a key transit state for US and NATO supplies to Afghanistan. 90 Azerbaijani peacekeepers are serving as part of the international coalition forces in the post-war country.
