Mental health challenges in spotlight at Baku gathering
BAKU – A number of problems with mental health are unresolved in Azerbaijan, the country’s senior psychiatrist has said.
Addressing a congress of the Azerbaijan Psychiatry Association in Baku last Friday, its head, Prof. Nadir Ismayilov also said the two decade-long conflict with Armenia over Nagorno Karabakh has had an adverse impact on people’s mental condition.
"The suicide rate is increasing by the day and the number of mentally ill people, particularly of nervous system disorders and cases of depression, is on the rise. To counter this, doctors have to reach a common point of view, outline and carry out certain measures," said Ismayilov, who sits on the advisory council of the World Psychiatric Association.
He said reform is being carried out in several treatment and prevention facilities jointly with the health ministry and work is underway to open new facilities.
