Dire floods cause damage in Azeri regions
BAKU – Torrential rains that occurred in past days have caused floods in several Azerbaijani regions, damaging homes and infrastructure.
The floods inflicted considerable damage to the northern and northwestern regions, with heavy rainfall reported in Guba, as well as in Gabala and Ismayilli.
Several villages were inundated, with dams ruined and bridges becoming unsafe, and damage was inflicted to private homes and the rural economy.
The worst hit was the Ismayilli region where floods destroyed a dam at a power plant under construction and ruined bridges. The region’s commission for emergencies said torrential rains in mountainous areas had caused water levels in local rivers to surge five-fold. In 80 percent of Ismayilli’s villages, the roads, water and gas supply lines and communications were severely damaged, and power supply was severed.
