BAKU – Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev was presented the Crans Montana Forum’s highest award in Brussels on Thursday at the opening of the annual event, according to the president’s website.

"Our goal is to achieve peace in modern Azerbaijan," President Aliyev said at the awards ceremony. "A strong position allows our country to pursue an independent policy, and Azerbaijan’s stance on regional and global projects overlaps with that of its partners. I consider this award as one granted to Azerbaijan."

The Azerbaijani President, who joined the forum with First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, noted that Azerbaijan has been a member of the Council of Europe for 10 years and is now strengthening its ties with the European Union.

The 22nd Crans Montana Forum taking place this year was joined by heads of state, ministers and business leaders from a number of countries.

The next forum will be held in the Azerbaijani capital Baku in June 2012.
