US, Russian and French leaders to issue statement on Karabakh

BAKU – US, Russian and French presidents will issue a joint statement on the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh on the sidelines of the Group of Eight summit due in Deauville on Thursday, Russian presidential aide Sergei Prikhodko was quoted by the local media as saying.

Prikhodko said the agenda includes the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement and a joint tripartite declaration is being prepared for the summit.

Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a brutal war that ended with the signing of a fragile cease-fire in 1994. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory has been occupied by Armenian armed forces since then. Peace talks brokered by US, Russian and French mediators through the OSCE Minsk Group have been largely fruitless so far.
