Azerbaijan seeks Minsk Group’s report to OSCE assembly

BAKU – Azerbaijan calls on the OSCE Minsk Group brokering settlement to its conflict with Armenia over Nagorno Karabakh to report to the OSCE parliamentary assembly on its work, a member of the Azerbaijani delegation at the assembly has said.

Eldar Ibrahimov’s statement came during his meeting with OSCE PA President Petros Efthymiou in the Milli Majlis (Azerbaijani parliament) on Thursday.

Efthymiou pledged to ensure that the Minsk Group submits such a report during the assembly’s summer session to be held in Belgrade.

The Minsk Group, co-chaired by Russia, France and the United States, has been working to reach a solution to the Karabakh conflict since Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a precarious cease-fire in 1994 following a lengthy war. Numerous rounds of negotiations have been largely fruitless so far.

The OSCE PA head stressed the importance of resolving the Karabakh conflict peacefully and in line with international law. "Peace and stability in the South Caucasus are important not only for the region but also for Europe," he said.

Efthymiou said the OSCE could be a format of talks facilitating a peaceful settlement of the long-standing dispute.

Vice-Speaker Bahar Muradova said at the meeting that it was pivotal that the OSCE PA pass a resolution on the Karabakh conflict.
