EU ‘deeply concerned’ over Azeri-Armenian clashes

YEREVAN – The European Union is "deeply concerned" over the continuing skirmishes on the contact line of Azerbaijani and Armenian troops, its official was quoted as saying on Friday.

Stefan Fule, EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy, told a news conference with Armenian Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandian in Yerevan that the conflict parties are to realize that a solution based on the use of force is unacceptable, Armenian media reported.

"The sides should also pay attention to their rhetoric," he said, adding that though some progress has been achieved in the conflict settlement, bellicose statements are impeding the peace process.

The two South Caucasus republics waged a war in the early 1990s, which claimed some 30,000 lives and displaced about a million Azerbaijanis. Armenia has been occupying over 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory since then. A ceasefire accord was signed in 1994, but OSCE-brokered peace talks have been largely fruitless so far.
