Man sets himself on fire after failing to get govt aid
BAKU – A 24-year-old man has committed suicide in an Azerbaijani region by setting himself on fire after failing to receive financial aid from the government, his family members said.
Jamaladdin Pashayev, a low-income rural resident of the Barda region, had repeatedly applied for financial aid to a local center of the labor ministry, but the assistance was denied, they said.
Pashayev, a father of three, is said to have approached the social security center with his children on April 19 and set himself ablaze after pouring gasoline on his body. The man was rushed to a hospital, but did not survive.
An official of the Labor and Social Protection Ministry said Pashayev had applied for financial assistance in late February. On March 18, the ministry said it had rejected the application as he is not eligible for such aid because his family owns a car.
