BAKU – Head of the Council of Europe office in Azerbaijan has said he was unaware of the police breaking up Sunday’s antigovernment rally in downtown Baku, the detention of Swedish journalists during the protest and their deportation from the country.

Konstantin Yerokostopulos made the remarks to reporters when asked to comment on the opposition rally, during a seminar devoted to freedom of expression in Baku on Tuesday. He did not give details.

Three Swedish journalists who were filming the demonstration were detained and deported the following day, as they did not have permission to work in Azerbaijan.

Addressing the seminar, the CoE official said Azerbaijani citizens have filed 36 pleas over freedom of speech to the European Court of Human Rights so far, and three of them are being reviewed.
