Blast rocks oil well in Azeri region
BAKU – An explosion rocked a decommissioned oil well in Azerbaijan’s Terter region, 330 km west of capital Baku, on Sunday evening.
The residents living in nearby areas were immediately evacuated to safety. The police and emergencies ministry’s officers are patrolling the area.
Vidadi Baylarov, head of the Terter region’s Commission for Emergencies, told the Baku-based ANS TV channel that the accident was caused by high pressure due to gas that had accumulated in the oil well.
Tens of such wells were drilled in Terter in the 1930s. Oil produced there was transported to the Goranboy region and further taken to Baku by rail. Those wells were shut down in 2007 after their life-span expired.
Regarding the possibility of similar accidents at other wells, Baylarov said an evaluation by experts was being expected and that action would be immediately taken afterwards to avert a potential threat.
