World intercultural forum is Azerbaijan`s success – PACE chief
BAKU – The holding of the World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue is a great success of Azerbaijan, Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) President Movlud Cavusoglu said at a press conference on Monday while voicing his attitude to the situation in Azerbaijan.
"I congratulate the Azerbaijani government on occasion of hosting of the World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue [held April 7-9]. It was a great success for Azerbaijan. This issue is one of the priority issues, to which I pay attention. So I decided to take part in the forum. This event took place on a high level from an organizational point of view and from the perspective of the participants," he said.
Cavusoglu said that the overall situation in Azerbaijan is under the control of the PACE co-rapporteurs.
"They recently paid a visit to Azerbaijan. During my last visit to Azerbaijan, I had the opportunity to meet with President Ilham Aliyev, Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov and Parliamentary Speaker Ogtay Asadov. At the meetings, I have presented all the necessary messages from the PACE on democracy and human rights. Also, I spoke about the important transformations that have to be done. We also had a discussion on the rapid release of those arrested during recent demonstrations. I have received positive assurances on this issue. I made a special request to Asadov on the importance of adopting the necessary legislation. This issue is also reflected in the report related to the recent parliamentary elections," Cavusoglu said.
"I have held discussions with the Deputy Foreign Minister on the situation in Belarus. As you know, Azerbaijan included in the EU Eastern Partnership Program, while Belarus is excluded from this program. I had exchanged views with him on the relations between the Council of Europe and Belarus, and asked that Azerbaijan played a mediating role in this matter and made an effort so that Minsk took positive steps in this direction. I ask all PACE members to make efforts for the positive developments in Belarus," he added.
