OSCE mediators to scrutinize Armenian troops’ child killing

BAKU – OSCE mediators brokering settlement to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict will scrutinize the killing of an Azerbaijani child by Armenian troops during their ongoing visit to the region, Azerbaijan’s defense ministry said.

The co-chairs - Bernard Fassier of France, Robert Bradtke of the United States, and Igor Popov of Russia – and the OSCE chairman’s personal envoy will head to the village of Azerbaijan’s Aghdam region where nine-year-old Fariz Badalov was shot in the head by a sniper while playing in the courtyard on March 8. Their visit to the Orta Garvand village will take place during a monitoring to be held Wednesday on the contact line of the two countries’ troops.

Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a brutal war that ended with the signing of a fragile cease-fire in 1994. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory has been occupied by Armenian armed forces since then. Peace talks have largely accomplished no result so far. Sporadic clashes on the frontline continue.
