25 pct of expats in Azerbaijan are labor migrants – official
BAKU – About 25 percent of foreign nationals residing in Azerbaijan are migrant workers, the immigration agency’s chief said Friday.
Arzu Rahimov told a press conference that most of the foreigners are tourists, while others are married to Azerbaijani citizens, are their relatives or are receiving education in the country.
Foreign migrants are engaged in the industries that are in high demand in Azerbaijan, Rahimov said.
Some 450,000 foreigners reside in Azerbaijan. 80 percent of them are citizens of Russia, Georgia, Turkey and Iran. The rest of them are mainly citizens of the United States, Britain and CIS countries, he said.
Rahimov said 4,000 to 5,000 foreigners arrive or leave the country every day.
He stressed that Azerbaijan’s rampant economic development and political stability have made the country attractive for foreign nationals, and the number of foreigners coming to the country is increasing by the day.
Rahimov said the tightening of the visa regulations has not affected the arrival of foreigners to the country.
About 10,000 foreigners and stateless persons received work permits in Azerbaijan in 2010.
