Education official, school principals convicted over graft

Baku – A former education official and several school principals in Azerbaijan have been sentenced to jail terms on corruption charges by a Baku court.

Elmar Aliyev, who headed the Goranboy region’s education department, will serve 11 years in jail, while two principals of secondary schools in the region were sentenced to four years’ imprisonment, according to the Grave Crimes Court, which handed down the rulings.

According to the indictment, Aliyev arranged to collect money from the students of schools in Goranboy. The money was extorted in exchange for high test scores and the issuance of diplomas.

Aliyev’s eight inferiors, who were on bail, were handed down jail terms of three to eight and a half years, and were arrested in the courtroom.

Also, the court sentenced two defendants who failed to turn out for the trial to four and eight and a half years in jail respectively, and a search was declared for them.
