Soil cracks cause minor quakes, raise scholars’ concerns in Azerbaijan
BAKU – Cracks in the soil occurred in March in an area stretching from the Salyan region in eastern Azerbaijan to Hajigabul, near the capital Baku, a senior geologist has said.
Fakhraddin Gadirov, a department head at the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Geology, told the press that this caused cracks in some residential buildings and the eastern part of the area slid down by 5 to 10 cm.
"As a result of this process, small mud volcanoes emerged in some areas and three earthquakes in a row with 2.0-3.6 magnitudes occurred in Hajigabul."
Gadirov said the cracks continue to extend. "All theoretical researches show that the cracks could move toward Absheron [a region which includes the area surrounding the capital Baku]," he added.
