Azeri youths protest opposition leader outside his home
BAKU – About 50 people protested outside the home of the opposition Azerbaijan Popular Front Party (APFP) leader, Ali Karimli, on Thursday.
The protesters, mostly youths, held placards saying "Ali Karimli + radical Islamists = chaos" and chanted slogans against the party chairman. They also chanted "Long live [President] Ilham Aliyev", "Ilham Aliyev is our only president, our only leader" and slogans supporting the governing Yeni (New) Azerbaijan Party (YAP).
Protesters said they represented a number of youth organizations.
The APFP chairman claimed in remarks to Radio Liberty that the protest had been staged by the authorities in an effort to discourage the country’s opposition from struggle, but said the opposition would not back down.
