Azeri national to head CoE anti-torture body
BAKU – An Azerbaijani lawyer has been elected head of the Council of Europe anti-torture body, for the first time in the organization`s history.
Latif Huseynov, head of the Azerbaijani parliament’s state building and legislation department, was named chairman of the Council of Europe Committee against Torture for two years during recent elections. Huseynov takes over from Italy’s Mauro Palma.
The committee has the right to examine and evaluate the condition and treatment of inmates by visiting all detention facilities in the CoE member states, including jails and police precincts, children’s colonies, as well as mental institutions.
