Azeri opposition plans to launch protests
BAKU – Azerbaijan’s opposition has said it will begin preparations for protests soon. A relevant decision was made on Thursday by the steering body of the Public Chamber comprising opposition parties.
Agil Samadbayli, a member of the Coordinating Council, told Radio Liberty that the Chamber is expected to pass a decision on scheduling protests at its next meeting, due on Saturday.
"The main demands of protesters will pertain to a re-run of [2010] parliamentary elections, pursuing tough combat against corruption and bribery, and establishing a democratic society," Samadbayli said.
The Public Chamber, which comprises about 200 members, including representatives of political parties, NGOs and retired senior officers, was established following the parliamentary elections held last November.
