Norwegian rights group urges to scrutinize ‘illegal police check-up’

BAKU – The Norwegian Human Rights House appealed to Azerbaijani Interior Minister Ramil Usubov on Wednesday over what it said was an unauthorized police inspection conducted at its office in Baku.

Zamir Kazimov, who introduced himself as a district police officer, is said to have carried out the check-up last Friday without a search warrant.

The appeal said Kazimov inspected the office, questioned its staff without legal basis and prompted employees to provide personal information, and threatened to prevent the Norwegian Human Rights House’s further operation.

The statement termed these actions as a violation of the rights and freedoms enshrined in Azerbaijan's Constitution and laws as well as the international agreements joined by the country.

The group requested that Minister Usubov scrutinize the matter and take due action.

The Norwegian Human Rights House, a resource center for rights groups, has been operating in Azerbaijan since 2007.
