Saakashvili says Russia opposes Karabakh settlement: WikiLeaks
TBILISI – Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has said a settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh and reopening of the Turkey-Armenia border run counter to Russia’s interests, according to a new diplomatic cable released by WikiLeaks website.
The conclusion builds on US ambassador to Georgia John Bass’s correspondence concerning President Saakashvili’s meeting with US Assistant Secretary of Defense Alexander Vershbow in October 2009.
Saakashvili reportedly said that Russia will impede normalization of Turkish-Armenian relations and Karabakh settlement. He said Moscow favors further tensions in the South Caucasus region and the borders’ remaining shut.
Saakashvili was quoted as saying that Russia is looking for the United States to step aside and to continue manipulating the regional problems involving Iran, Turkey and Georgia.
