273 human trafficking victims in 2007
689 cases of human trafficking were registered and 273 people fell
victims of such crimes in Azerbaijan in 2007, a lawyer has
said.
The crimes were revealed by the Interior Ministry's body in charge of fighting such offenses.
Leyli Huseynova said most of these persons are taken to Turkey, Russia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Pakistan. The list has now been supplemented by Malaysia, Singapore and Australia. Human trafficking victims have started to be brought to Azerbaijan from abroad as well, according to the latest research.
The United Nations estimates that the number of human trafficking victims worldwide was 22 million last year. Those engaged in such illegal activities reaped profits to the tune of $22 billion, with $10 billion of the figure made up by trafficking in children alone.
UN experts say the problem is particularly aggravating in the newly-independent states as well as economically under-developed countries and those that have gaps in legislation.
