Ahmadinejad invites Azeri leader to Iran

BAKU – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has invited his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev to visit his country to attend celebrations of the Novruz holiday, Iranian Ambassador in Baku Mahammad Bagir Bahrami told the Baku-based ANS TV channel.

Bahrami said the events, due in Tehran in late March, will be joined by the leaders of the Islamic countries marking the Novruz holiday. According to him, President Ahmadinejad extended the invitation during the summit of the Caspian littoral states held in Baku last November and "this invitation will probably be extended in writing as well".

President Serzh Sargsyan of Armenia, with which Azerbaijan faces a long-standing conflict, is also expected to visit Iran to attend the Novruz festivities, Armenian media quoted Iranian Ambassador in Yerevan Seyed Ali Saghaeyan as saying. Prior to Sargsyan’s visit, the Iranian president is due to pay a visit to Armenia, Saghaeyan added.
