Azerbaijan, EU to sign agreements during Barroso’s visit

BAKU – Azerbaijan and the European Commission are due to sign several agreements during a visit to the country by the Commission’s President Jose Manuel Barroso, scheduled for January 13-14, according to Ambassador Roland Kobia, head of the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan.

Kobia told a news briefing Friday that the agreements, which are being agreed by the parties, will not be confined to the energy sector and cover various facets of the EU-Azerbaijan political dialog.

Kobia said the documents could be signed by the European Commission chief and President Ilham Aliyev and on the level of ministers.

Barroso will be accompanied on his visit by EU Energy Commissioner Gunther Oettinger.

Kobia termed the European Commission president’s arrival "an historic visit", noting that Azerbaijan will be the only South Caucasus country to be visited by Barroso. "This visit is an indicator of the sustainable development of cooperation between the EU and Azerbaijan."

The ambassador said that besides meetings with President Aliyev and other officials in Baku, Barroso is expected to deliver a speech on the process of Azerbaijan’s European integration.

This will be Barroso’s first visit to Azerbaijan in the capacity of the European Commission president. The visit was initially scheduled for June but was later postponed due to reforms in the EU.
