Azerbaijan rules out US aid in border security

BAKU – Azerbaijan is providing border security on its own and "does not need any outside assistance", State Border Service chief Elchin Guliyev has said.

He was replying to a question whether or not the United States continues assisting Azerbaijan in safeguarding the country’s maritime borders.

"All of us are probably familiar with the American diplomats’ reports filled with lies and slander against our state, statehood and our head of state, posted on the WikiLeaks website," Guliyev said. "After reading such reports, what cooperation can you talk about? This is out of the question."

Guliyev noted that Azerbaijan is closely cooperating on border security with neighboring countries, including Turkey.

He further said the State Border Service fully controls the Azerbaijan sector of the Caspian Sea using the equipment installed at the Coast Guard Center. Tens of Coast Guard vessels and a large number of boats are being used to fulfill this task, the border service chief said.

He added that state funds allocated for maritime border security have increased 20 times in recent years.
