Karabakh mediators hold talks with next OSCE chair

VILNIUS – Lithuania will focus on the prevention and settlement of conflicts during its OSCE chairmanship in 2011, the country’s Foreign Minister Audronius Azubalis has said.

The statement was made in Azubalis’ meeting with the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group brokering settlement to the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh, according to Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry.

The minister said the role of OSCE institutions and missions in conflict resolution should be stepped up.

During the meeting, discussions also focused on the impact of the OSCE summit held in Astana last week on the settlement of protracted conflicts.

Lithuania’s cooperation with the Minsk Group during its forthcoming chairmanship in the organization was discussed as well. Views were also exchanged on ways of building confidence between the public in Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict for two decades. OSCE-brokered peace talks kicked off after a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a shaky cease-fire in 1994. Armenian armed forces continue to occupy over 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory. Peace talks have been largely fruitless so far.
