Azerbaijan aiding fight against forest fires in Israel
BAKU – Azerbaijan will send two airplanes to Israel to assist in fighting forest fires, Russia’s IzRus news portal reported.
A number of other countries have also pledged assistance. Greece will send in four airplanes, while Russia and Spain - three planes each, and Turkey will aid the relief effort with two planes. Eight more aircraft are also to be sent to Israel from France, Britain and Croatia.
The fires, raging around the city of Haifa, have already engulfed about 2,000 hectares. The Israeli government has evacuated over 12,000 people from a town and several settlements in the region.
On Thursday, 36 officers and privates of the senior penitentiary institution were found dead on a bus in the afflicted area. They are said to have arrived to assist in evacuating the inmates from a local jail and burnt alive.
