Turkey’s Gul downplays WikiLeaks reports, affirms close ties with Azerbaijan

ANKARA – Turkish President Abdullah Gul has said there is "full and reciprocal trust" between Turkey and Azerbaijan, in his comments on recent WikiLeaks reports that cited Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s alleged criticism of Ankara’s policies.

"Honorable Mr. Aliyev said he was upset over this during our meeting in Astana. And I replied that there is no need to be upset, because we don’t believe what was posted there [on the WikiLeaks website] anyway."

The WikiLeaks report, released Sunday, contains alleged secret cables sent by US diplomats to the State Department. The cables include quotes by President Aliyev during his meetings with US officials. In the most recent letter, ascribed to US Charge D’Affairs Donald Lieu, the Azerbaijani president allegedly said in a meeting with US Undersecretary of State William Burns that he had "distaste" for the Erdogan government in Turkey, underscoring the "naivete" of Ankara’s foreign policy. Aliyev was also quoted as saying that the real reason Azerbaijan decided to sell gas to Russia last year was "illustrating to our Turkish friends that they will not be allowed to create a gas distribution hub".

President Gul further said Turkey and Azerbaijan share interests in the implementation of energy projects in the region.

Gul called on the media "not to fall into the WikiLeaks trap".

"This [the release of the cables] should not affect our domestic policy or consume our energy. Those are things written by American diplomats to their centers. Some of that is true and some is false. Some of those are dirty writings, and those indicate the level of those diplomats."

The Turkish president added that the issue is the United States’ problem and the country should control its archives.

The Azerbaijani president's press service has said the views and comments posted on the WikiLeaks website "don't reflect the reality and are absolutely unreasonable".
