Karabakh mediators in Baku for talks
BAKU – The OSCE mediators brokering settlement to the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno (Upper) Karabakh conflict and the personal representative of the OSCE chairman-in-office arrived in Baku for talks on Thursday.
The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group representing the United States, Russia and France have held a meeting with President Ilham Aliyev to discuss Karabakh settlement prospects.
French mediator Bernard Fassier told journalists in Baku that the upcoming Astana meeting of the OSCE member states’ leaders is crucial, therefore, substantial preparations should be made for it.
The Karabakh issue will be discussed at the OSCE summit due in the Kazakh capital December 1-2.
After wrapping up their visit to Azerbaijan on Friday, the Minsk Group co-chairs will leave for Armenia.
The mediators met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow on Wednesday.
Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict for two decades. 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory has been under Armenian occupation since the two South Caucasus republics signed a precarious cease-fire in 1994 following a lengthy war.
