Aliyev praises Azerbaijan’s co-op with NATO
BAKU – President Ilham Aliyev has said Azerbaijan’s cooperation with NATO is beneficial, as the leaders of the countries contributing to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) met as part of the alliance’s summit in Lisbon on Saturday.
President Aliyev said that Azerbaijan is active within the NATO’s Partnership for Peace (PfP) program and the Individual Partnership Plan (IPAP), noting that the country is closely involved in the bloc’s peacekeeping operations around the world. He said Azerbaijani troops were facilitating NATO’s mission in Afghanistan as part of ISAF, both militarily and in terms of civilian purposes.
President Aliyev visited Portugal November 19-21 to attend the NATO summit. In conclusion, participants adopted a new strategic concept covering the next ten years, a declaration of the Lisbon summit and a statement of the alliance’s leaders and heads of state and government assisting NATO efforts in Afghanistan. Also, NATO and Afghanistan put pen to a declaration on long-term partnership.
The declaration, passed by the senior officials participating in the North Atlantic Council meeting, contained a clause supporting Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity.
