EU envoy meets freed Azeri bloggers
BAKU – The European Union special envoy for the South Caucasus Peter Semneby met with two Azerbaijani bloggers recently released from prison during a short visit to Baku on Sunday.
During the conversation with Adnan Hajizade, Emin Milli and their family members, discussions covered the state of freedom of speech in Azerbaijan and the bloggers’ future plans.
A Baku court in November 2009 sentenced Milli to two and a half years in prison, while Hajizade was sentenced to two years on charges of hooliganism and an assault on two other men. But their supporters claim their arrest was politically motivated. Milli and Hajizade were released under separate court rulings last Thursday and Friday.
Semneby told journalists that the EU had closely followed the bloggers’ case.
"I am very glad that legal procedures were carried out beforehand allowing for their release," he said.
