Iran, Azerbaijan see eye-to-eye on Caspian issues: Ahmadinejad
BAKU – Iran and Azerbaijan have the same approach to the Caspian Sea issues, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said after talks with his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev in Baku on Wednesday.
Ahmadinejad told a news conference that the Caspian should be "a sea of peace, friendship and well-being". He said all littoral states should avail of the basin’s resources and this use is to be fair.
"Azerbaijan’s stance to that end is proper. We will also discuss these issues at the Caspian coastal nations’ summit due in Baku tomorrow, and an important document will be signed in conclusion."
Regarding the development of bilateral relations, Ahmadinejad said Azerbaijan and Iran are friendly and fraternal nations.
"This friendship and brotherhood stem from a common culture. The friendship between Azerbaijan and Iran has ancient and deep historical roots. As my brother Ilham Aliyev said, the Azerbaijan-Iran relations are at a very good level. Azerbaijan and Iran are the main axis for the region’s stability."
Ahmadinejad added that there is tremendous potential to develop bilateral relations but it has not yet been fully capitalized upon.
