Armenia expands drills in occupied Azeri land

BAKU – Armenian armed forces have expanded the scope of military exercises launched in the occupied Azerbaijani territories on Thursday.

The sounds of shelling intensified in the occupied parts of the Aghdam and Khojavand regions, the Baku-based ANS TV channel reported on Friday.

Artillery, shells and tanks, as well as Grad rocket launchers are being used. Roaring explosions are heard not only in Aghdam but also in Aghjabadi, Terter and Barda districts close to the contact line of the two countries’ troops. Two helicopters are also hovering above ground on the Armenian-controlled side of the frontline.

Armenia and Azerbaijan waged a war in the early 1990s. Armenia still occupies part of Azerbaijan’s internationally recognized territory. OSCE-brokered peace talks have been largely fruitless so far and sporadic clashes on the frontline continue.
