NATO to mull Karabakh resolution in spring - official

BAKU – The draft resolution on the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno (Upper) Karabakh that has been removed from the agenda of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly will be discussed at the organization’s spring session instead, Azerbaijani First Vice-Speaker Ziyafat Asgarov has said.

The resolution, drafted by Canadian rapporteur Raynell Andreychuk, was initially to be put on discussion at the assembly’s committee on political affairs on Saturday but later removed from the agenda. The Armenian delegation at NATO PA claimed that the discussions have been cancelled following its appeal.

The Azerbaijani vice-speaker told reporters that the discussions on the resolution planned at the fall session have been postponed upon Baku’s request.

"We have sent a letter to the NATO PA head, noting that the Azerbaijani delegation will not be able to attend the session due to the [November 7] parliamentary elections and requesting that the resolution be considered at the next session. We received an affirmative response."

Asgarov dismissed the statement made by Yerevan. "The Armenian side’s presenting the postponement of the draft resolution as [the outcome of] their extensive efforts is erroneous."

According to Asgarov, the draft resolution containing six clauses confirms the Armenian occupation of Azerbaijani territories.

Armenia and Azerbaijan waged a war over the mountainous region of Nagorno Karabakh in the early 1990s. Armenia has been occupying over 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory since then. Numerous rounds of OSCE-brokered negotiations have been fruitless so far.
