European observers content with elections in Azerbaijan
BAKU – A European group has expressed content with the conduct of Azerbaijan's parliamentary elections held Sunday.
The European Election Monitoring Academy, which comprises 163 lawmakers and experts representing 27 European countries, the United States and Canada, observed the polling in 77 constituencies on election day.
Belgian MP Alain Destexhe said while releasing the observation mission’s findings that the voting procedure had been organized professionally and in compliance with international standards. Voters were active on election day and in some polling stations people even lined up to cast their ballots. Voters enjoyed unimpeded entry to polling stations and finger-inking was conducted properly.
Destexhe also said observers faced no problems with monitoring the ballot count and this process was transparent.
The European academy’s mission called on Azerbaijan to continue building sustainable and democratic institutions.
125 parliament members were elected for a five-year term under the majority of votes. The ruling Yeni (New) Azerbaijan Party (YAP) gained victory at the polls, according to preliminary tallies.
